In the wake of graduating from the Bachelor of Music program (Boston University 1963) however, after watching the liberal arts process in my teaching career (Brown University, 1971-75), I am an advocate of education that integrates studying the arts alongside study of other subjects. This is not surprising coming from an ethnomusicologist, who earned an MA in 1967 and an Ph.D. from UCLA. My ethnomusicology program, which was started at UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is conveniently located in an music department within the College of Letters and Science. It is possible to pursue many areas of interest is something that I truly enjoy. It is a great pleasure teaching graduate as well as undergraduate students. I am the writer of 3 books, Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically and Music in Japan, Experiencing Music and Expressing Culture. In between, I'll alternate between periods that are primarily academic work and times of administrative tasks (I served as Chair of Department of Music from 1983 through 1988, and Dean of undergraduate Advising in 1992-98 and the Chair of College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-98; Chair of Group of Asian Studies from 1999, I am currently Chair of the Department of Music).
